My Son - The Super Hero

To all of those mom and dads...I am sure your children have done some funny things that you will treasure and never forget.  Well here's one of my favorites...

If any of you have been following any of my comments, you know I work in a campground and stay there during that time.  Well, one year my older son who was approximately eight years old at the time decided to help me out.  Now, I do not like slugs.  I can't touch them; I don't want to look at them; I don't want them anywhere near me.  One day we came back to the RV from the beach and there were two slugs stretched out right next to the door handle.  My kids and I are throwing stuff on these slimy things and they just would not move.

My son decided he was going to help me out.  He goes into the RV for approximately five minutes and the next thing you know the door is flung open.  Well, I just started roaring.  Here he is with a cape around him and a strainer with toothpicks sticking out of the holes on top of his head.  In his hand are these ninja stars he made up with toothpicks and a small wad of play dough.  He then proceeds to start throwing them at these slugs.  When he used up his homemade ninja stars, he just grabbed single toothpicks to throw at the slugs.  They weren't moving anywhere; they were being stubborn and stayed there.

Approximately ten years after this I said to him "Remember when you came out with the strainer on your head?  He said to me with a look that was so endearing and I will never forget this, "Mom, I was trying to be your Super Hero".  My heart melted.

----------

We never did get those slugs off.  We finally asked someone and found out that they will move when you pour salt on them.

My Super Hero...

There They Go Again

He was almost there Pon. If you nudge them loose with a toothpick, they would drop into the strainer and you can then "return them to the wild". Little kids are so neat that way. My granddaughter (3 1/2) will fall asleep in the recliner. When her two year old brother climbs up there and falls asleep, she puts her arm around him and moves him to a position where he can't fall off. If she was awake, she'd probably yell at him but, when she's halfway asleep, nothing is going to hurt her little brother. They're going to be fun to watch when they go to school. I pity the bully that tries to pick on him. Now I remember why I became a teacher, little kids are so cool.

Eeewwwwww!!!! None of us wanted to touch them. I creep out everytime I see one.

You are right. Let someone try to pick on your grandson and the wrath of a mother hen will be eminating from your granddaughter daring anyone to bring it on.

You are a teacher...my sister was in the educational arena and received her masters during her tenure. She has retired, but does occasional tutoring in the math and computer science fields.

There They Go Again

I was a teacher (among many other things I did to make a living). Teaching was the most fun of any of them though, particularly when I started with the younger ones (6th grade and younger). Before that I taught History and Political Science at the high school and college level. The little ones were so much better though. They were so eager to learn new things.

Nothing like the love of a dutiful son to see you through a bout of slugophobia. :-)

You've got a pretty neat son--but then you already knew that.

Regards,

KO

Hi 58rose

He still wants to be my super hero. He tells me if he ever gets to the point where he makes money, I will never have to worry about anything. Actually, both of my sons have said that.

He always makes sure he calls me on holidays and just calls to see if I am OK. A super hero indeed.

What a wonderful memory/story to have of your son...too bad there weren't pictures lol! How you describe him just conjurs such a hilarious/sweet image. You are a stronger person than me....I probably would have started crying as my heart was melting. (My husband is always asking "ok, who dropped the hat?!!")
